Established in 2007 by a group of enthusiastic young Los Angeles poets, THE DRUMS INSIDE YOUR CHEST is a yearly performance poetry concert series that presents amazing, entertaining & award-winning poets to an audience that doesn’t usually go for poetry.
The DRUMS credo might go something like: raise the profile of the poetry community amongst nay-sayers, art patrons and Los Angeles culture mongers; increase the audience for good poetry; and get some press/high-level media exposure for all the poets and sponsors involved.
DRUMS VOLUME I was a rousing success and featured 7 mind-blowing poets and talented magician/host Rob Zabrecky performing for a packed house at the Brentwood Theatre in Los Angeles on August 4, 2007. Poets who performed were: Derrick Brown, Jeffery McDaniel, Mindy Nettifee, Beau Sia, Buddy Wakefield, Bucky Sinister and Amber Tamblyn.
Hosted by poet Beau Sia in a pink birthday suit on August 2, 2008, DRUMS VOLUME II featured six, incredibly engaging new poets and an intense new setting at the New Los Angeles Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Poets who performed were: Andrea Gibson, Mike McGee, Jack Hirschman, Wanda Coleman, Brendan Constantine and Roger Bonair-Agard.
From 2008 on, proceeds from DRUMS will benefit the non-profit Write Now Poetry Society, dedicated to finding ways to connect audiences and readers with great poets. writenowpoets.org
The life of DRUMS V. I continues online in an extended YouTube trailer and in a CONCERT FILM which premiered at the 2009 Newport Beach Film Festival.
